Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Cultural dances are vital elements of traditional events, serving as both entertainment and expressions of cultural identity. These dances often narrate stories, celebrate communal achievements, and reflect the history of a people. In Potiskum Local Government Area, cultural dances are integral to events such as weddings, festivals, and coronation ceremonies, acting as a unifying force within the community. According to Yusuf and Abubakar (2024), cultural dances enhance the visual appeal and emotional connection of events, drawing greater participation from attendees. They not only preserve heritage but also act as a medium for passing down traditions across generations. This study delves into how cultural dances contribute to the success of traditional events in Potiskum, emphasizing their role in audience engagement, cultural preservation, and the overall effectiveness of these events.

Despite the significant role cultural dances play in traditional events, their contribution is often undervalued or overshadowed by modern forms of entertainment in Potiskum LGA.
